  1. Brominated vegetable Oil (BVO)

First, we have Brominated vegetable Oil (BVO), that always we found at our soft drink and sodas, this kind have Banned in places like Europe and Japan. In contrast, BVO is America allow this compound to be the ingredients of soda and soft drink there. But what is BVO exactly? BVO is a chemical derived from vegetable oil that keeps citrus flavoring from separating in packaged beverages.

Overexposure to bromine and brominated chemicals has been linked to memory loss and nerve disorders, breast cancer, prostate cancer, ovary cancer, thyroid problems and infertility. though BVO is used in such small quantities in beverages, no conclusive studies have yet found its direct correlation with health disorders.

In 2014, Coca-Cola and PepsiCo declared to remove BVO from their ingredients lists, in favor of more natural ingredients, but the FDA still considers BVO a safe ingredient. Olestra is used in low fat products that contain no calories, no cholesterol and no fat and is also used as cooking oil for frying. Olestra first created by Proctor and Gamble was first approved by FDA as a food additive and a replacement for unhealthy oils.

However, later on it became clear that besides removing fat from foods, olestra blocks the body’s ability to absorb essential minerals and vitamins. Olestra used in fried foods such as fries, french fries, potato chips, and more snacks. Thus, the use of Olestra can cause you to gastrointestinal problems, bowel syndrome, cramps and weight gain. While countries like UK and Canada have banned olestra, FDA has kept this toxic oil as a legal food additive and oil for cooking.

Dangers: FDA stated in 1996 that Olestra can be used as food additive in cooking oil and butter. Meanwhile, Olestra removed excess fat from foods that restricts the body’s system in absorbing essential vitamins and minerals. By then, consuming Olestra has drawbacks such as cramps, gas and loose bowels, and also bloating.

  1. BHA/BHT

Many fast food restaurants use Butylated hydroxyanisole (BHA) and butylated hydroxytoluene (BHT) for their food additives. Also, you can find Butylated hydroxyanisole (BHA) and butylated hydroxytoluene (BHT) contents in cereals, processed meat, candies and gums. 

In some countries such as European countries and Japan, Butylated hydroxyanisole (BHA) and butylated hydroxytoluene (BHT) are banned. In contrasts, BHA/BHT is alowed in US but with some strict exception. Things to concern is, BHA/BHT can be so harmful for people such as insomnia, increased appetite, and loss of energy.
